Kimberley Flash News

Yeah, we made it! We survived the Gibb River Road with only one puncture and one welding job (fuel tank protection plate). Our dear car appears to have loved the 8000kms of dirt tracks to date. So did we, as these dirt tracks kept us off from the large streams of tourists as we crossed the continent from busy Maroubra-Sydney on the Pacific Ocean to extremely remote Port Warrender-Admiralty Gulf on the Indian Ocean.

Believe it or not, as we crossed the border to WA, time did not only stand still for 90 minutes, but night minimum temperatures also didn't drop below 15 degrees any more. What a treat! And since we got into the Kimberley, we had a swim a day in one of the countless waterholes, gorges and rockpools along the way.

The girls had their daily marathon training and can now easily to two and half hour walks on Grade 4-5 trails (slippery rocks and steep ascends). Of course, with their short legs, they need some help now and again, and they will go at half the pace of an adult, but with double the steps ;-) This teaches us parents to be patient, keep smiling (the old carrot and stick thing...haha!). As an ancient proverb says, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

We don't even want to start listing the countless highlights we've encountered since we left the Tanami Desert. One gorge is more beautiful than the other... Check the West Kimberley photo set on flickr to get a grasp:Please Click Here (and check out the slideshow function)!
We're still working on selecting the pics for the Mitchell Plateau and East Kimberley as we'll complete the Grand Tour via El Questro and Bungle Bungles over the next week before heading to Broome.
